What is the Riverside District Business Improvement Area?

The Riverside District Business Improvement Area (BIA) is an association of local business people and property owners who work in partnership with the City to enhance their business district. A BIA provides for a self-imposed assessment on commercial property to be raised within a specified geographic area. The proceeds from the assessment are used to provide services that benefit the District.

What has your BIA achieved for you?

Streetscaping
Completion of Phase I and II of a multi-million dollar street reconstruction project launched the transformation of this area in 2002. The first phase included upgrades to the Don Bridge, installation of decorative brick work, and burying of the hydro wires. Phase II included the addition of unique pedestrian lighting, street pole upgrades and a beautiful bridge mural undertaken by local artists. Future work will involve new trash receptacles and tree pit grates, along with some strategically placed benches throughout the District.

Facade Improvement Program
Spurred by over $130,000 of City of Toronto grants, nearly $950,000 of private investment in the properties along Queen Street has been generated over the last two years. For more information on the program and to see the transformations underway, visit our Facade Program page.

Riverdale Art Walk Sponsorship
As one of the founders of the annual Art Walk, the BIA has supported the two-day event since its inception. The Art Walk attracts over 6,000 visitors to our area to interact with 100 artists over 35 locations. Media partnership with Now Magazine ensures that Riverside District's brand as an arts destination is promoted throughout the city.

Marketing Plan and Branding Strategy
The BIA commissioned Up Inc, a Toronto branding, design and communications firm to develop a new name, identity and marketing strategy for the area. Through historical research and member/partner interviews, Up Inc developed a new logo and visual brand that reflects the renewed energy associated with the Riverside District.

Grafitti Removal Program
In an effort to improve the overall appearance of the District, the BIA has hired a private company to monitor and remove grafitti on public and private property.
